On top of mobile app development and search engine optimization, GrowIt Media also specializes in social media marketing. While the hashtag was originally established on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have become two of the biggest platforms to promote businesses using a small amount of money and hashtags for searching purposes.
The History of the Hashtag
In 2007, nearly ten years ago, a social technologist named Chris Messina tweeted this:
?how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]??
A simple sentence on Twitter launched a search strategy that would transform the internet and pop culture hereafter.
Hashtags were a way information – namely, posts – to be organized by topics or phrases, preceded by a pound sign. Since then, hashtags have spread to nearly every social media platform, despite its initial criticism – many in the social technology world believed the hashtag would never take off.
This seems hard to believe, considering they are now one of the easiest ways to search information, gain followers and initiate interactions on social networks. Hashtags are used today by businesses, musicians, bloggers, entrepreneurs, and more.
How the Hashtag Works
A hashtag is more or less an organization tool that groups together ideas. If you search by a #[word or phrase], all posts containing the hashtag will be in the search results. Many individuals do not always use tags relevant to the post, but add them regardless because of how frequently that tag is searched.
When businesses use hashtags for marketing purposes, studies show that this doubles engagement as users are twice as likely to interact with a promotion containing hashtags.
Hashtags can also be used for humor and connection. Some suggest to use a lot of the same hashtags your followers use, as these are the ones they are most likely to search and use to engage their friends.
While one should not go overboard on tagging, Instagram has a feature where the user can discreetly hide their hashtags in the comments. As long as it remains under the character count, there can be as many hashtags as necessary.
